Intended Learning Outcome: Listen to a guest speaker/lecturer who has rich experiences, anecdotes, stories, and advice to share about their chosen profession.

Feedback and Comments:
  • We recommend inviting guest speakers months in advance – give them a simple brief, and book a date to avoid last-minute changes. You can then send a more comprehensive brief a week or 2 before the speaking engagement.
  • Professors may want to have a pre-interview with the guest speaker or lecturer, especially if this is the first time the speaker will be invited, just to ensure that what they will share is in line with the course objectives, topic, or needs of the class. The professor can also take this time to orient the speaker on UA&P decorum (e.g., dress code when visiting campus).
  • Professors may want to inform their students about the guest speaker or lecturer ahead of time and the topic to be discussed so they can do their research on the speaker and prepare questions. Professors can also prepare questions of their own in case there’s any dead air during the open discussion/Q&A portion.
  • Professors may want to ask the students to submit to a Canvas Discussion or to submit a reflection paper which includes their learnings and insights from the guest speaker.

“I enjoyed the several guest speakers that gave talks in our classes. It allowed us to learn more about the world wherein our lessons are applied. They showed us how our careers would usually look like after graduating, and I think it greatly benefited my learning.”

“The invitation of speakers every now and then is very helpful! We learn about how our ideas can be practically applied to real life situations and of how we can make use of our knowledge.”

“I really loved how we had guest lecturers that complement the lessons we have. We were able to gain a better understanding of the topic at hand because we can directly ask questions to people in the industry and even get advice about marketing, business and life. I think what made the guest lectures really enjoyable was the engaging conversations we would have. It felt like a more organic way of learning.”

Understands the learnerLearners need varied teaching and learning activities. By inviting guest speakers/lecturers, students are able to hear from fresh voices and perspectives and listen to their professional and insightful stories.
Inspires curiosity and self-developmentAfter listening to the guest speakers, learners may be encouraged to learn outside of the classroom. Their minds will now be more open to the world of work. They can also network with the guest speakers for possible learning opportunities.
Thoughtfully doneThe professor needs to choose a credible guest speaker who can effectively speak to the class.
Achieves learning goalsGuest speakers are able to bring more depth into the lessons the class is learning which helps them better achieve the learning goals.
