Intended Learning Outcome: Develop habits that manifest… the desire for deep learning, continuing self-development, and excellence in one’s work.

Feedback and Comments:
  • Professors will need to plan their class itineraries carefully if they want to accommodate this design pattern. Keep in mind that drawing out insights cannot be rushed, so take this into consideration.
  • This was initially used to process internships (aka practicum), which is why being able to reflect on what happened “on the job” was crucial to help the students better see the relevance and applicability of their lessons.
  • Consider giving chances for different students to speak each session, so everyone has the opportunity to speak at least once.
  • Professors can also opt to dedicate a class (or separate meeting) to this, for a more thorough discussion. This can be done every few weeks, at the mid-point of the semester, or even to close the course.

Understands the learnerThe activity itself seeks to check on how the students are faring with the class and/or other activities, for the purpose of advising them or intervening if necessary.
Nurtures student well-beingFor students to share their personal opinions and experiences, the environment must also remain safe, encouraging, and open.
Inspires curiosity & self-developmentBy having students reflect on the class and their own performance, they are given the opportunity to further develop themselves.
Achieves learning goalsThe students have a better idea of what they have been able to accomplish by being able to debrief in the company of their fellow classmates and professor.
Systematically reviews & improves the learning experienceBy hearing feedback from the students this way, professors better know when they need to take action to tweak aspects for their course – either for the current class, or future ones.
