When I contract COVID or experience vaccine side effects

What to do if you (or a family member) catches COVID

  1. Report your condition to the Center for Student Affairs (CSA)
Aside from answering the weekly Student Welfare Survey, students are encouraged to report their condition to their professors, program directors, deans, and the CSA Office of Student Services, to ensure all parties are duly informed.  This way the CSA can identify how they can assist you accordingly (e.g., invite you to online wellness sessions and games, refer you to the Guidance office for mental health concerns).

More notably, the CSA sends care packages to “help in some way in the recovery process of the students”. You can read more about this here.

Reach the CSA through the following:

What to do if you get vaccinated

  1. Let your professor and/or group mates know in advance.
Give them a heads up if you will need to miss class because it’s your vaccination date. Even if you are not sure how the vaccine may affect you, let them know that you may need 1-3 days off to deal with side effects.

They will appreciate the time you gave them to prepare and think of how to work around your absence! And remember to be a responsible student – do not take advantage of the situation and skip class if you are feeling fine. If the situation suddenly changes, you can let your professors know – at least you gave them a warning beforehand.
  2. Double-check due dates with your professor.
If you had to miss class, make sure to check-in with your professor on assignments or tasks you may have missed out on so you can work on a compromise – whether this is reopening the requirement for you, or giving a make-up task.

If you informed them in advance, be sure to re-check the requirements’ due dates as well – you may find that your professor has already adjusted it for you.

Overall, communication is key. If it so happens that you are not allowed to make up for something that you missed or are penalized for missing class, it is important that you can show that you did your best to reach out to your professor and inform them of the situation.

If they do not reply on Canvas, we recommend trying to reach out via email or text. If they still do not respond, or if your avenue of communication is limited to Canvas only, try reaching out to the subject department’s admin assistant or program officer.

Which academic guidelines are important to remember in these situations?

  1. Professors are expected to provide flexibility during this time
Though the course of action to take is at your professor’s discretion, being completely rigid and not allowing opportunities to make up for the absence, or even penalizing a student for an absence, are not allowed (see next point).
  2. Failure due to absence (FDA) is still not applicable for AY 2021-22
“Moreover, should graded requirements be given during synchronous sessions, students who are not able to join such sessions should be given alternative ways to comply with the requirements that are in no way placed at a disadvantage.”
